At the start of the 2017, I spent a lot of time re-evaluating everything. 2016 was a phenomenal year in my life, but a slow year for this blog. It’s not like I was quiet or complacent, it’s just that I devoted a lot more energy to my YouTube channel. And I think it probably became clear to anyone reading that my heart wasn’t really in this blog anymore.

And after almost 8 years (magalic.com turned 8 on Jan 5th) I wondered if maybe, just maybe, I had outgrown this space. But it didn’t take me long to realize that I still very much loved this blog, I just missed certain aspects of old blogging. Most of my favorite bloggers from, say even five years ago have stopped blogging because instagram is easier & quicker, & does anyone even read blogs anymore?

But the solution to my funk was staring me in the face all along – I don’t have any control over the blogosphere on the whole, or other people but if I miss doing something I love, I should just start doing it again!

Here’s the first post of my new monthly series – Looking Back. It’s kinda similar to the Just a Minute series that I did in 2013-14. Just a monthly post wherein I share anything that I haven’t had the chance to share elsewhere. Updates / changes to this blog. Exciting (& maybe not so exciting?) things happening in my life. And a round up of notable pop culture (movies / TV shows / music / books) I consumed that month. And it’ll be picture heavy, of course. Just a hodge podge word photo dump of the month gone by.

I’m a bit late with my first post as it’s already the 15th of Feb, but better late than never, am I right?

Three’s Company

If you read my farewell 2016 post, you probably remember Brittany another little kitten (& our first female!) we were fostering since mid December through World for All, a local animal rescue organization doing wonders for stray cats & dogs in Mumbai.

Well, we were happy with having just two cats. It seemed like the ideal number to have in a city apartment but then she bonded so well with our eldest, Thelma that is seemed criminal to seperate them. So now we have three cats.

She’s getting older now, but they’re just the very best of friends & my heart swells just seeing the way they interact with eachother – it’s not like they don’t fight, but she also grooms him so much, & he instinctively hugs her when they’re close by, & it’s just the cutest thing ever.
Our middle cat Honey isn’t pictured here, because there was definitely a bigger adjustment period with him. And he still largely keeps his distance, but the apartment is big enough for that. And they have their tender moments too!

Blog Updates

I redesigned the blog at the end of last year. It’s subtle enough that you might not even notice, but to my eyes, it both looks nicer & functions better than ever! It’s also now a more secure website (https instead of just http) & is running like a well oiled machine.

I’ve always considered this blog to be a reflection of me. Over eight years, it’s changed a lot & moved in different directions as well – but I’ve been pretty stubborn about one thing – that I be the only writer here. I started this blog just so I can develop a writing habit & I’ve never really connected with blogs that run under one person’s name, but have an army of writers, or worse, unpaid / underpaid ‘interns’ generating content for them. But I’ve also come to the realisation that I want to diversify. I want more voices on this blog & I want to share more stories. So I’m (slowly, apprehensively) opening up this blog to contributors. I had one of my oldest blogging friends, Roanna (of JupiterSkye) kick things off with a little Oman travel guide. If you’re a female that loves writing & has a story to share, whether it’s a travel guide, beauty post, recipe, DIY or something else that you think would be a good fit, just shoot me an email (or a twitter DM) & let’s chat.

What Else?

Watching… I cancelled my Netflix subscription sometime last year. It felt weird to do that after a year of being a loyal subscriber, but it was easier to love it when I had access to the US catalog. Once they started banning VPNs, & took off M*A*S*H, I realized that it wasn’t all that attractive to me any longer, besides, saving almost ₹600 rupees per month isn’t half bad.

I’m an avid Amazon shopper, & of course a prime member, because who doesn’t love free, quick shipping with no mandatory minimum purchase? Plus, it’s just so cheap right now. Sometime in December they launched their Amazon Prime Video service in India, & while the catalogue pales in comparison to Netflix, it’s nice since I paid the same amount for a year’s prime subscription that I used to pay for a month of Netflix. And since I was already paying for Prime, the video is practically free. I’m re-watching Seinfeld from start to finish for the second time. It’s been about six years since I last watched it & it’s mostly been hilarious, this time mom’s watching too (she doesn’t like it as much though).

Listening To… João Gilberto’s greatest hits. I’ve been on a Bossa Nova kick for a few months now, I never thought I’d get this obsessed with a genre of music sung in a language I don’t understand, but it’s actually helping me pick up a bit of Brazilian Portuguese. I also listened to a fair amount of the La La Land soundtrack since I watched the film in December. I still don’t get the fuss about that movie, to me it was just ok & I find it mind boggling that people are tripping over themselves to watch it just because it’s a musical & brilliant / funny shows like Galavant failed because there just isn’t enough audiences for musicals. I guess people will watch anything that’s hyped? Sigh. But I digress. Another Day of Sun (the opening number) has to be my favorite part of the film, because of the very upbeat / catchy vibe & that ridiculously extravagant dance number. It isn’t on YouTube yet, but I think Jimmy Fallon’s take on it for the Golden Globes cold open was wonderful too. More music data on my last.fm profile.

Buying… Not much. I’m on a makeup buying ban / detox until the end of this year, so there’s none of that this Jan. I did buy some fashion items just before the Bangkok trip, because I knew I wanted to make a lookbook there (The Bangkok Lookbook is LIVE & I really like how it turned out). I’m really trying to move away from consumerism on the whole in the new year, but what can I say; old habits die hard. I manage to save up by not making frivolous purchases, but then I want / need something big, like a gadget & boom! there goes my bank balance. Sigh. I think I’m getting better though. It’s not like I’m saving money on the whole, just redirecting old obsessions to new ones, like travel.

January 2017 Favorites

Since Feb 2014 I’ve been reasonably consistent with doing a monthly favorites video & my January Favorites shares my beauty, fashion & tea! There’s also a cute little video clip of Brittany cat towards the beginning. If you’d like details / links of all the things mentioned (like the source of this cute Mickey Mouse mug) just head on over to the video page.

Travel

Most of January was spent in the shadow of our big Bangkok trip! I loved it so much back in September that I knew I wanted to come back soon, so we immediately planned another one. Here are a few snapshots from our first day.

Mom & I went for just under a fortnight, we stayed in my favorite hostel, ate all the local food (delicious!), drank all of the iced drinks (which was not the smartest idea, in hindsight) & just had a great time. There are already two vlogs from the trip live on my YouTube channel (you can find them at the top of the Travel Playlist) & more will be coming your way soon.

We’ve already planned our next trip – it’s a couple of months away, but I’m just trying to plan everything properly. Not much for the actual trip (we prefer spontaneity) but as a blogger / vlogger, I need to plan / shoot / edit content well in advance so I can keep doing two videos a week even when away from home (super thankful for YouTube scheduling).

So that sums up my January in about 1500 words. Phew. What was yours like? As always, feel free to share any highlights or recommendations you may have! x

Talking about my reading journey, new-found love for Audiobooks & Celebrity Memoirs along with mini reviews of some of some of my recent favorites & details on how you can try two for free!

I Used To Read Books…

This is one of those posts that I’ve been meaning to write for months but somehow didn’t get around to it. As a kid & tween – I read books. A lot of books. Anything I could get my hands on, I read. Storybooks, novels, anthologies, fiction, non fiction & everything in between. I frequented the school library, bought second hand & borrowed. Some of my first income as a teenager was spent buying books, I have some very special memories associated with those. But somewhere in my late teens, I found myself still buying new books at the same pace, but falling behind when it came to actually reading them.

This was difficult to cope with at first – reading had been such a huge part of my identity growing up (I’m pretty sure one of my first facebook profile picture had me sitting with a Mary Higgins Clark novel – over 7 years ago!) I soon came to the conclusion that I had burnt myself out, what with college, running this blog & more. I read a lot online & so it was difficult to find the time & motivation to curl up with a book – I knew I would get back there in my own time. Buying books wasn’t helping the clutter situation in my room too much, so I stopped.

Embracing Technology & New Forms of Consuming Written Word

In the interim, I’ve been trying newer forms electronic forms of consuming the written word, including a Kindle (I love my paperwhite!) & Audiobooks. This is not a debate about which form is better than the other – books will always have their irreplaceable charm, but electronic alternatives are sustainable – easier to carry (daily or while travelling – I don’t miss weighing my vacation bags down with 3 or 4 paperbacks), space saving in apartments & of course more eco friendly. This post is purely to share why I’ve been loving audiobooks so much & how I like listening to them.

I didn’t think I would ever seriously consider audiobooks for myself – I always imagined them as many CD packs & in my head they were only for long drives or sight impaired people. I couldn’t possibly fathom why I would ever choose being read to over reading something myself, at my own pace (usually very fast, I speed read most of the time).

Then one of my favorite YouTubers suggested Audible & I decided to sign up for their free trial, figuring I had absolutely nothing to loose. Fast forward a year & a half later & I almost can’t imagine my life without Audible!

The Perfect On-The-Go Listening Companions

Audible comes in the form of a handy iOS app (it’s available for Android too, obviously) & I enjoy listening to Audiobooks on with my Sudio Earphones. Sudio is a Swedish company than makes beautiful earphones for your tech. I’d almost given up on earphones because they tend to hurt (was sticking to headphones only) until the Sudio Klang came into my life. These earphones ooze luxury (I know that sounds corny but I couldn’t think of a better way to describe it!) The box that it came in was so utterly gorgeous, & it the earphones are perfectly designed. Earphones are nifty, but tend to look a bit too loud or cheap quite often. In stark contrast to that, Sudio Klang wouldn’t look out of place with even black tie attire, & comes in it’s own über stylish leather pouch.

Why Audiobooks?

As I mentioned above, I couldn’t understand what audiobooks had to offer, why I would choose them over reading. Turns out, being read to is incredibly soothing. Sometimes when I’ve been staring at a screen the whole day, I don’t feel like picking up & staring at a book. So I can turn out the lights, rest my eyes & just listen.

It is also particularly awesome during long journeys, when reading books isn’t recommended because of the vehicle shaking (or at least that’s what my mom always told me). I love plugging my years in, listening to an interesting book while watching the trees pass by my window. In fact, I finished three or four audiobooks in December itself, during the slower moments of a trip to Goa.

Mini Audiobook Reviews

Do you want to know another area where Audible really shines? Celebrity memoirs. I’m obsessed with popular culture (especially television!) & listening to a celebrity read this own writing feels both very entertaining & personal. So I thought I’d give mini reviews of a few audiobooks I’ve <del>read</del> listened to since I got an Audible account.

When I was thinking of what books to start with, I’m proud to say that I turned to my comedy / feminist idols first.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

This was supposed to be one of the greatest comedian memoirs of all time, the one all books have since tried to emulate. Tina Fey reads this one excellently (she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for her narration). She talks about everything from Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, Saturday Night Live & of course 30 Rock. My two favorite parts of the book are Chapter 15 – I Don’t Care If You Like It (described by her as one in a series of love letters to Amy Poehler) & Chapter 25 – What Should I Do With My Last 5 Minutes? (the final one) where she lays down the truth about why female comedians are often branded as crazy-

“I have a suspicion – and hear me out, ’cause this is a rough one – I have a suspicion that the definition of “crazy” in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore.

The only person I can think of that has escaped the “crazy” moniker is Betty White, which, obviously, is because people still want to have sex with her.” – Tina Fey, Bossypants

I found myself nodding along throughout, & I was reminded of it when I watched the Last Fuckable Day Sketch on Inside Amy Schumer with Tina Fey, Patricia Arquette & Julia Louis Dreyfuss. It’s NSFW (language!) like most of Inside Amy Schumer but easily one of her finest sketches ever.

In short, I think this was a brilliant first audiobook for me to start with & needless to say I definitely recommend it.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

I can honestly say that I have anticipated the release of a book more than Yes Please. I squealed out loud when the news first broke that Amy was writing a book, which was probably only topped by how loud I screamed when the cover was released. This is the only audiobook I’ve ever preordered, on the first day it became available to pre order! So yes, I’ve taken up four lines of my mini review just to tell you how much I looked forward to it, but I feel like it’s relevant.

Yes Please didn’t disappoint one bit. I could have easily finished it in a day, but I chose to stretch it over four months because I didn’t want it to be over. Amy was adamant about the fact that she didn’t want to do a traditional tell all autobiography, instead Yes Please is a collection of stories about her life, youth, relationships, friendships, even sex & drugs.

She’s funny, self deprecating & brutally honest. She doesn’t dish dirt about the low moments in her life like her divorce & even said that she doesn’t like people knowing her shit. She just described it as too personal & too sad. I loved learning about her childhood & early twenties, it just made me love her even more as a person. At this point I should let you know that I am notoriously bad at writing coherently or objectively about things that mean a lot to me (which is why I still haven’t written a tribute post to David Bowie, neither do I intend to) but Yes Please was one of the most poignant pieces of writing I have ever read. Never has any book made me laugh & cry as much, & I would heartily recommend this book to every living being.

When I read that the Yes Please (paper) book was going to have drawings, I wondered if I was missing out by getting the audiobook. But I think that other than being wonderfully written, this was one of the best produced audiobooks I’ve had the pleasure of listening to, there are parts read by Carol Burnett, Seth Meyers, Mike Schur, Eileen Poehler & William Poehler (her parents!), Patrick Stewart & Kathleen Turner. The last chapter is also read in front of a live audience. Amy was also nominated for a spoken word Grammy for the audiobook this year.

I feel like I should also mention that she has an entire chapter dedicated to Tina Fey as well, because those two are #FriendshipGoals all the way (& the only reason I watched the Golden Globes for three years!)

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell

This book is kind of special for me because it was the first international book I bought (way back in 2010! I even blogged about it) so I pondered for a while about whether I needed the audiobook as well. But I’m glad I bought it. Bruce Campbell has an iconic voice & this is wonderful to listen to. I always crack up at the part where he describes how he got his scar-

“There is an L-shaped scar on the left side of my chin. People always ask me how I got it and I’ve told them everything from “One dark night in Bombay,” to “A scuffle with bad, bad, Leroy Brown …”

In actuality, it came about because I was a fearless kid. I played outside a great deal of the time, in any weather and in suburban Detroit, Michigan, that’s saying something. In this age where laser surgery rushes to correct every imperfection, I’m not going to touch that scar—it reminds me of too much fun.” – Bruce Campbell, If Chins Could Kill

As the audiobook was published twelve years after the paper one, Bruce gives little asides & updated throughout, which really adds to the experience.

I think I’ll wrap up the reviews, because I’ve been listening a lot & this could go on forever. Maybe I could do a part 2 soon?

So with Audible, you can either buy books a la carte or sign up for a membership. The Gold Membership costs $14.95 a month, wherein you get one credit which is redeemable for one audiobook & a 30% discount on any a la carte purchases while you’re a member.

The best part? Audible offers a no obligations 30 day free trial, with two free audiobooks. You can sign up here if you’d like to try it. You will need to have a card on file (if you have an Amazon India account, the same login details work!) & if you cancel before the month ends, you don’t have to pay a cent & still get to keep the audiobooks you chose. Happy listening! x

January has been a great month & I’m definitely a little sad that it’s over.

Watching… I rarely watch movies in the cinéma but in January I saw two – Sholay in 3D & The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Both were great. The 3D in Sholay was pretty gimmicky but I loved being able to see the film on the big screen. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was everything I hoped for on more! On the television front – I just started watching Will & Grace, thanks to my ongoing obsession with 90s sitcoms – especially the ones set in New York. Also, how absolutely beautiful was the 200th episode of How I Met Your Mother? The mother’s rendition of La Vie En Rose was the first time a song has made me cry (twice) it’s just so moving. I had been following along half heartedly but now I am so excited to see how they wrap up!

Listening to… The soundtrack of the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Yes, I did download it for the Kristen Wiig/David Bowie faux duet of Space Oddity (a lovely song, so well used in the film) but I fell in love with a lot of the other songs such as Grace Mitchell’s cover of Hall & Oates’ Maneater & Don’t You Want Me by Bahamas feat. The Weather Station (better than the original!)

Cooking… Since trialling the Raclette grill in December I really couldn’t get grilling out of my head so after a lot of research I bought a tabletop grill! It’s a lot of fun to use & pretty convenient, I’ve been grilling everything from meats to paneer.

Buying… The aforementioned grill. Otherwise, I’ve been trying to save for my summer vacation.

Looking forward to... Keeping a regular filming schedule for my YouTube channel, spring cleaning!

Some thoughts on democracy after reading George’s Orville’s Animal Farm.

Obama just arrived in Mumbai yesterday & everyone is gripped with a bad case of Obamamania. (Yes, that is a word. If it wasn’t, I just coined it).

Anyway, all the news papers & channels are talking about how he could learn something from his visit to India, especially since India & USA are the world’s two largest democracies. And that got me thinking… mostly about the word democracy.

I actually first started thinking about it when I read the book Animal Farm by George Orwell as part of my English literature course in college. I must admit that at first I dismissed the book as slightly silly. Big Mistake. For those of you who haven’t read the book yet, it is awesome. If I had to recommend just ten must-read books, this would be on the list.

Plot summary: It’s about animals on a farm, ruled over by a cruel & despotic farmer names Jones. They decide to have a revolution & overthrow him. For a while they are truly & genuinely happy & satisfied, but slowly one pig from the farm itself takes over leadership, convincing the animal through an excellent orator that everything he did was for ‘their own good’. Slowly he & the other pigs live in more & more luxury while the less intelligent animals do all the work. And in the end the pigs become as bad as, if not worse than the farmer Jones that they overthrew, yet the foolish animals think they are ‘free’. Moral of the story? Communism is a great ideal but can never really be effectively put into practice due to the one thing that corrupts any man: Power. For more information go here.

I then remembered this one thing our professor said in class. She said that for a (corrupt) government to be successful, the people they rule have to be under the impression that they have control over the government. Deception is key. And then suddenly it all made sense… India is the largest democracy in the world. I know that there are two forms of democracy, direct democracy & representative democracy. And that India is obviously a form of representative democracy. Just think, hypothetically, whether it would ever be possible to implement any form of direct democracy in the country. Not only is India so populous, but a very large percentage of that population is illiterate, hence very easily swayed by bribery & other political propaganda. And without mincing words, 99% of the population is completely oblivious to any political going ons & would not be able to make any decisions regarding an entire country. So obviously there is absolutely no way direct democracy could ever be implemented. So we have representative democracy. We are encouraged to do be a responsible citizen by voting. And most of us do that. But what exactly are our options? Choose the lesser of all the evils. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying don’t vote. We all have to do our bit to keep the extremist, hateful parties out of power. Yet, even whichever party you may term as the least corrupt party in our country is without a doubt corrupt to a very large extent. And what about the people who really do want to make a difference and not be corrupt while joining politics? They are reduced to being corporators in their city itself. If they want to go any further in politics, they have to join a political party. (We all know where that will lead!)

Can you blame me for having a very idealized view of democracy, thanks to this quote:

“Democracy is the government of the people, for the people, by the people.”

–Abraham Lincoln

And am I also to blame because since I don’t have any political aspirations whatsoever, my only choice is to watch this political circus with disgust? That now I represent the cynics in society à la Benjamin from Animal Farm?

Now this situation isn’t all bad. When politicians get caught in very ugly scandals, they usually resign or are thrown out by their parties. I can think of five other countries within 30 seconds where there isn’t even a farce of democracy, where there are just the cruel, corrupt despots & people who are jailed & killed on a daily basis just because they demonstrate/ask too many questions/write negative things regarding the government. So obviously we are much better off.

After I present all these facts to you, do you still think India is a free country?

So what is the solution to this sorry state of political affairs in the world largest democracy? I have absolutely no clue. But I hope I at least gave you something to think about. x

First of all, Bitch slap is a film I have known about since a long time (March 2009 to be exact. At least that’s when I first blogged about it.) I followed news about the movie for a very long time (I followed their twitter & subscribed to their YouTube channel).

I finally succumbed & ordered the DVD (unrated) from USA & watched it in May this year. I didn’t think of reviewing it till I saw to my absolute shock that it’s actually in Mumbai theaters right now!

First, about the film:

Bitch Slap is described as a post-modern, thinking man’s throwback to the ‘B’ Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950s–70s as well as a loving, sly parody of the same.” The movie is inspired by the movies Dragstrip Girl, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Kung Fu Nun, and the pantheon of blaxploitation films.

Now, what I thought of it. Keep in mind that I am very positively biased towards the film because it features Lucy Lawless, Renée O’Connor & Kevin Sorbo (Xena & Gabrielle from Xena: Warrior Princess & Hercules from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) in cameo roles. It also stars Michael Hurst (Iolaus from Hercules…) in a pretty big role. So, when I finally settled down on vacation in a very nice five star hotel, I was in a very good mood.

And then I saw the film.

It maybe feminist in some ways, but I must admit it really did shock me. It has a non-linear story line, & more than half into the film, I was still confused as to who’s who (maybe that was the point, still.) The acting was pretty hokey from the leads & I think it was just the cameos that made me feel good about the film even after watching it – bear in mind that the critics haven’t been kind at all; and I definitely see their point of view.

It is full of explicitness (mostly verbal), is pretty crass, & there were a few times when I wondered whether I was watching a soft-core lesbian porno film (they did say it was inspired by Blaxploitation films!) Keep in mind that I am reviewing the unrated version, not the mulch you’re gonna see in cinemas after it passes through the Indian Censor Board! It’s full of hot women & has lots of mindless violence & fighting (cat fights mostly). It does have a few decent plot twists, though.

After I’ve said all that, I must say I still enjoyed the film.

And if you do wanna see it, take my advice, don’t see in a cinema, get your hands on the unrated version & enjoy it as it was meant to be seen. x

So here goes-
Two individuals proceeded towards the apex of a natural geologic
protuberance, the purpose of their expedition being the procurement
of a sample of fluid hydride of oxygen in a large vessel, the exact
size of which was unspecified.

One member of the team precipitously descended, sustaining severe
damage to the upper cranial portion of his anatomical structure;
subsequently, the second member of the team performed
self-rotational translation, orientated in the same direction taken by the
first team member.

Were you able to figure it out?

Scroll down to read the same thing in simple language.

..

..KEEP GOING…

..

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after!

So, did you figure it out? I know I didn’t. x

I’m back from a hectic class trip, & initially I figured I wouldn’t blog today as I’m just too tired. So I sat to read other people’s blogs, leave comments, & also reply to comments on my own blog. Then I decided to inspect the many labels on my blog. And realized, to my absolute shock & horror, that there’s no post labeled ‘feminism.’

Anyway, I introspected a bit to find why I didn’t blog about feminism before, which is am important part of who I am. Maybe it was just to not pick a fight with any of my male blog readers.

So I’m officially announcing today, ‘I’m feminist!’ (though the ‘about me’ section of my blogger profile has stated the same since months!)

I’ve never had a boyfriend. Teenage boys sorta make me sick. I do not harbor any ‘romantic’ dreams for the future, but I do hope to meet a guy whom I think I can grow old with. But I HATE guys who treat women like servants. Or think that they’re inferior. There’s this little internet joke I’d like to share. I’ve read it over a year ago, & it’s been circulating around the internet ever since. So I cannot attribute it to anybody except ‘the internet’. So here’s the joke-

Once upon a time, in a land far away, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened upon a frog as she sat contemplating ecological issues on the shores of an unpolluted pond in a verdant meadow near her castle.

The frog hopped into the Princess’ lap and said: “Elegant Lady, I was once a handsome Prince, until an evil witch cast a spell upon me. One kiss from you, however, and I will turn back into the dapper, young Prince that I am and then, my sweet, we can marry and setup housekeeping in yon castle with my Mother, where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children, and forever feel grateful and happy doing so.”

That night, on a repast of lightly sauteed frogs legs seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce, she chuckled to herself and thought: I don’t fucking think so!

I identify a lot with the Princess’ character. I think I might be like Princess Mia from ‘Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’ I hope to fall in love someday, but I don’t need to have a guy to feel complete. x
