May was a month for discovering new places (on that note, don’t forget to watch my Phaltan Vlog) & finding ways to deal with unbearable heat. There’s quite a few suncare related products, because it was very hot when I filmed this. It’s now cloudy & very rainy in Mumbai, please don’t let that make you skip sunscreen because harmful UV rays still penetrate through clouds!

Doesn’t the term adult colouring book sound like an oxymoron at first? I mean, we all know colouring books are for kids, right? But in the last few months adult coloring books have been absolutely everywhere! In a stressful world where a majority of us spend most of our workdays in front of screens, adult colouring books are designed to be soothing & to help you destress. Needless to say, they’re nothing like the colouring books of your youth but are instead much more intricate.

I had been hearing about adult colouring books for a while, but when I heard Good Earth was coming out with their own, I knew I had to buy it. What makes this book special?

A book of discovery, Bagh-e-Bahar: A Mughal Garden is a Colouring Book for Adults. Unfold an enchanted story of imperial palaces and verdant gardens of fruit and flower blossoms told in our signature design aesthetic.

Co created by Penguin Books, it’s the first of its kind in India, Bagh-e-Bahar will take you on a journey of mindfulness through beautiful patterns taken from our rich design archive, and will bring joy to the everyday.

Bagh-e-Bahar Adult Colouring Book + Cretacolor Artists Studio Line Watercolor Pencil Set of 24

I love Good Earth’s design aethetic & I’ve previously showcased their gorgeous Farah Baksh design journal. While that was inspired by the culture & landscape of Kashmir, this book is obviously about mughal culture & the designs are everything from flowers, to typical Mughal miniatures & even some geometric designs.

I especially love the pages with negative space like this one & the whole book is peppered with poetry by Rumi.My colouring weapon of choice has always been pencils & I’ve been using this beautiful set of Cretacolor Watercolour Pencils.

I find the whole process to be not just calming but almost meditative. If I’m feeling restless (mentally, more than physically) it clears my mind so I can then focus on one thing.

The book has so many beautiful, intricate pages that I’ll probably take a year to finish it, but so far I’ve been really enjoying this activity, I even mentioned it in my May Favorites! x

Talking about my reading journey, new-found love for Audiobooks & Celebrity Memoirs along with mini reviews of some of some of my recent favorites & details on how you can try two for free!

I Used To Read Books…

This is one of those posts that I’ve been meaning to write for months but somehow didn’t get around to it. As a kid & tween – I read books. A lot of books. Anything I could get my hands on, I read. Storybooks, novels, anthologies, fiction, non fiction & everything in between. I frequented the school library, bought second hand & borrowed. Some of my first income as a teenager was spent buying books, I have some very special memories associated with those. But somewhere in my late teens, I found myself still buying new books at the same pace, but falling behind when it came to actually reading them.

This was difficult to cope with at first – reading had been such a huge part of my identity growing up (I’m pretty sure one of my first facebook profile picture had me sitting with a Mary Higgins Clark novel – over 7 years ago!) I soon came to the conclusion that I had burnt myself out, what with college, running this blog & more. I read a lot online & so it was difficult to find the time & motivation to curl up with a book – I knew I would get back there in my own time. Buying books wasn’t helping the clutter situation in my room too much, so I stopped.

Embracing Technology & New Forms of Consuming Written Word

In the interim, I’ve been trying newer forms electronic forms of consuming the written word, including a Kindle (I love my paperwhite!) & Audiobooks. This is not a debate about which form is better than the other – books will always have their irreplaceable charm, but electronic alternatives are sustainable – easier to carry (daily or while travelling – I don’t miss weighing my vacation bags down with 3 or 4 paperbacks), space saving in apartments & of course more eco friendly. This post is purely to share why I’ve been loving audiobooks so much & how I like listening to them.

I didn’t think I would ever seriously consider audiobooks for myself – I always imagined them as many CD packs & in my head they were only for long drives or sight impaired people. I couldn’t possibly fathom why I would ever choose being read to over reading something myself, at my own pace (usually very fast, I speed read most of the time).

Then one of my favorite YouTubers suggested Audible & I decided to sign up for their free trial, figuring I had absolutely nothing to loose. Fast forward a year & a half later & I almost can’t imagine my life without Audible!

The Perfect On-The-Go Listening Companions

Audible comes in the form of a handy iOS app (it’s available for Android too, obviously) & I enjoy listening to Audiobooks on with my Sudio Earphones. Sudio is a Swedish company than makes beautiful earphones for your tech. I’d almost given up on earphones because they tend to hurt (was sticking to headphones only) until the Sudio Klang came into my life. These earphones ooze luxury (I know that sounds corny but I couldn’t think of a better way to describe it!) The box that it came in was so utterly gorgeous, & it the earphones are perfectly designed. Earphones are nifty, but tend to look a bit too loud or cheap quite often. In stark contrast to that, Sudio Klang wouldn’t look out of place with even black tie attire, & comes in it’s own über stylish leather pouch.

Why Audiobooks?

As I mentioned above, I couldn’t understand what audiobooks had to offer, why I would choose them over reading. Turns out, being read to is incredibly soothing. Sometimes when I’ve been staring at a screen the whole day, I don’t feel like picking up & staring at a book. So I can turn out the lights, rest my eyes & just listen.

It is also particularly awesome during long journeys, when reading books isn’t recommended because of the vehicle shaking (or at least that’s what my mom always told me). I love plugging my years in, listening to an interesting book while watching the trees pass by my window. In fact, I finished three or four audiobooks in December itself, during the slower moments of a trip to Goa.

Mini Audiobook Reviews

Do you want to know another area where Audible really shines? Celebrity memoirs. I’m obsessed with popular culture (especially television!) & listening to a celebrity read this own writing feels both very entertaining & personal. So I thought I’d give mini reviews of a few audiobooks I’ve <del>read</del> listened to since I got an Audible account.

When I was thinking of what books to start with, I’m proud to say that I turned to my comedy / feminist idols first.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

This was supposed to be one of the greatest comedian memoirs of all time, the one all books have since tried to emulate. Tina Fey reads this one excellently (she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for her narration). She talks about everything from Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, Saturday Night Live & of course 30 Rock. My two favorite parts of the book are Chapter 15 – I Don’t Care If You Like It (described by her as one in a series of love letters to Amy Poehler) & Chapter 25 – What Should I Do With My Last 5 Minutes? (the final one) where she lays down the truth about why female comedians are often branded as crazy-

“I have a suspicion – and hear me out, ’cause this is a rough one – I have a suspicion that the definition of “crazy” in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore.

The only person I can think of that has escaped the “crazy” moniker is Betty White, which, obviously, is because people still want to have sex with her.” – Tina Fey, Bossypants

I found myself nodding along throughout, & I was reminded of it when I watched the Last Fuckable Day Sketch on Inside Amy Schumer with Tina Fey, Patricia Arquette & Julia Louis Dreyfuss. It’s NSFW (language!) like most of Inside Amy Schumer but easily one of her finest sketches ever.

In short, I think this was a brilliant first audiobook for me to start with & needless to say I definitely recommend it.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

I can honestly say that I have anticipated the release of a book more than Yes Please. I squealed out loud when the news first broke that Amy was writing a book, which was probably only topped by how loud I screamed when the cover was released. This is the only audiobook I’ve ever preordered, on the first day it became available to pre order! So yes, I’ve taken up four lines of my mini review just to tell you how much I looked forward to it, but I feel like it’s relevant.

Yes Please didn’t disappoint one bit. I could have easily finished it in a day, but I chose to stretch it over four months because I didn’t want it to be over. Amy was adamant about the fact that she didn’t want to do a traditional tell all autobiography, instead Yes Please is a collection of stories about her life, youth, relationships, friendships, even sex & drugs.

She’s funny, self deprecating & brutally honest. She doesn’t dish dirt about the low moments in her life like her divorce & even said that she doesn’t like people knowing her shit. She just described it as too personal & too sad. I loved learning about her childhood & early twenties, it just made me love her even more as a person. At this point I should let you know that I am notoriously bad at writing coherently or objectively about things that mean a lot to me (which is why I still haven’t written a tribute post to David Bowie, neither do I intend to) but Yes Please was one of the most poignant pieces of writing I have ever read. Never has any book made me laugh & cry as much, & I would heartily recommend this book to every living being.

When I read that the Yes Please (paper) book was going to have drawings, I wondered if I was missing out by getting the audiobook. But I think that other than being wonderfully written, this was one of the best produced audiobooks I’ve had the pleasure of listening to, there are parts read by Carol Burnett, Seth Meyers, Mike Schur, Eileen Poehler & William Poehler (her parents!), Patrick Stewart & Kathleen Turner. The last chapter is also read in front of a live audience. Amy was also nominated for a spoken word Grammy for the audiobook this year.

I feel like I should also mention that she has an entire chapter dedicated to Tina Fey as well, because those two are #FriendshipGoals all the way (& the only reason I watched the Golden Globes for three years!)

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell

This book is kind of special for me because it was the first international book I bought (way back in 2010! I even blogged about it) so I pondered for a while about whether I needed the audiobook as well. But I’m glad I bought it. Bruce Campbell has an iconic voice & this is wonderful to listen to. I always crack up at the part where he describes how he got his scar-

“There is an L-shaped scar on the left side of my chin. People always ask me how I got it and I’ve told them everything from “One dark night in Bombay,” to “A scuffle with bad, bad, Leroy Brown …”

In actuality, it came about because I was a fearless kid. I played outside a great deal of the time, in any weather and in suburban Detroit, Michigan, that’s saying something. In this age where laser surgery rushes to correct every imperfection, I’m not going to touch that scar—it reminds me of too much fun.” – Bruce Campbell, If Chins Could Kill

As the audiobook was published twelve years after the paper one, Bruce gives little asides & updated throughout, which really adds to the experience.

I think I’ll wrap up the reviews, because I’ve been listening a lot & this could go on forever. Maybe I could do a part 2 soon?

So with Audible, you can either buy books a la carte or sign up for a membership. The Gold Membership costs $14.95 a month, wherein you get one credit which is redeemable for one audiobook & a 30% discount on any a la carte purchases while you’re a member.

The best part? Audible offers a no obligations 30 day free trial, with two free audiobooks. You can sign up here if you’d like to try it. You will need to have a card on file (if you have an Amazon India account, the same login details work!) & if you cancel before the month ends, you don’t have to pay a cent & still get to keep the audiobooks you chose. Happy listening! x

It’s a little late for this, but better late than never, right? 2014 was a phenomenal year!

Best of 2014-

Places- Munnar, Kerala. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to!

TV Shows- Brooklyn 99, Key & Peele (I also fell in love with Scrubs!)

Movies- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Sholay (the remastered version!), Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, Ugly. I didn’t watch too many films but loved the four that I did see.

Music- David Bowie (Nothing Has Changed / The Buddha of Suburbia), She & Him (Volume 1), Pat Benatar (Best Of), Kansas (Best Of), Pet Shop Boys (Actually)

Books- It was the year of audiobooks for me, nothing will ever replace reading but I love audiobooks now especially when they’re being narrated by the author. You can try Audible for one month with no obligation, & I highly recommend doing so because it might just be life changing. My favorite book was hands down Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, it’s so wonderfully written & hearing her narrate it is the best (her parents & Katherine Turner also guest-narrate. It’s an incomparable experience !)

Happy New Year to all of you & your loved ones. Oh & Life etc. turns six today!! So thank you to every single person who has taken the time to read / comment / share anything from here over the years.

The epic David Bowie Is V&A exhibition ended less than a week ago. Although I didn’t get to attend, I bought myself the accompanying book anyway.

I won’t go into great detail (as Creative Review has already done a review with a lot of great information). I’ll just show you a few pages, some favorites & some random ones.

Keeping in tune with the exhibition’s branding, the color bright tangerine with the same photo from the Aladdin Sane session. I also have the bag (or, umm, two bags…)

David Bowie Is… (deluxe hardcover)

I really liked seeing the medium format contact sheets, because you get to see the outtakes as well. The first one if from when he was a mime. A lot of you must have seen this stunning photo by Terry O’Neill for the Diamond Dogs cover, but here’s the whole contact sheet, uncropped & unedited.

The storyboard drawn by the man himself for the Ashes to Ashes video.

One of the best songs ever written {for the uninitiated}.

Album covers: The Berlin era & beyond.

Storyboard for the Escher inspired Within You sequence from Labyrinth.

There’s so much that I haven’t covered, including costumes throughout his career, etc. I’m not lying when I say that it’s an absolute must have for any David Bowie fan. Lot of the material is made public for the first time & it’s pretty vast. The quality is absolutely superb too.

I ordered it online. I’m not sure how long this will stay in print as it’s meant to accompany the exhibition (that just ended) so if you’re looking to get this, don’t snooze!

Two weeks ago I shared photos from the Vegetable Market at Mangalore so today I’m posting photos from the other market I visited, the fish market. Although the last two photos are actually from the harbor where the fishing boats come in.

There is fish of every type, along with other seafood like prawns, squid & crab available, all having come in just that morning. The fish market is sheltered, that couple with the fact that I really dislike using a flash means the lighting is slightly iffy in some of these pictures.

I’ve been reading a wonderful book called Photographs Not Taken, a book with essays by photographers on their failed attempts to make pictures. I identify with the concept on so many levels. Call it introvertism, social anxiety or whatever else you may, but ever since I can remember I’ve always found the thought of approaching & talking to a previously unknown person very intimidating. I can’t even remember the number of times I’ve wanted to approach someone to ask if I can take their photo but haven’t done so. Or worse, the few times I’ve made whoever was with me at the time ask for me. When I was staying in Mangalore, I really anted to photograph at least one policeman. Policemen in South Indian actually wear cowboy hats as part of their uniform, not only is it practical in the hot, sunny weather, I think it’s really awesome. There was one policeman stationed at the junction just 100 meters away from where we were staying, but I really disliked the though of approaching a policeman so I didn’t.

When we were just walking out of the harbor area & heading back to our vehicle, we passed a policeman who was practically grinning at me (he must’ve found the fact that I had two cameras round my neck rather amusing). Just as we passed him I realized that I could have asked to take his photo but didn’t. By then it was too late, the moment had passed & I was reluctant to walk back. So there you have the portrait of a Mangalore Policeman that never happened. It’s nowhere near as poignant as some of the essays in the book (in fact, now that I’ve typed it out it seems rather pathetic) but I thought I’d share it anyway. Do you have any stories of photos you wish you’d taken?

Photographs Not Taken is a wonderful book, especially if you’re interested in reading about photography – the process & stories (even though the book itself doesn’t have any photos). I’d highly recommend buying it if you can find it. Since it wasn’t available locally here, I just turned to the internet, as always.

I’ve always liked cooking but in the last year or so I’ve really been bitten by the bug. I don’t usually use or buy cookbooks but I prefer following cooking blogs. But the one cuisine I haven’t made much is Indian (the irony!) & I knew I had to start somewhere so I started to research cookbooks. And this cookbook stood out at once.

It’s was published by Phaidon who specialise in visual books, seemed very comprehensive & it won a Gourmand cookbook award too. I’m always attracted to well designed books & I’m very happy with this one. It’s hardbound & hefty at over 800 pages The cover is designed like a sack of rice with a ‘quality assurance’ red star & there are even some parts that look smudged for aesthetic effect (the blue on the top).

Best front end paper ever! The author Pushpesh Pant is an academic who lives in Delhi. As a book created to represent the entire cuisine of India (very diverse!) it has been twenty years in the making. The introduction includes a brief history of India food, some information on the regions of India etc. The recipes are divided into 10 sections, namely Spice Mixtures and Pastes // Pickles, Chutneys and Raitas // Snacks and Appetizers (vegetable, fish & seafood, meat) // Main Dishes (vegetables, fish & seafood, meat) // Pulses // Breads // Rice // Desserts // Drinks // Guest Chefs (recipes contributed by chefs at Indian restaurants around the world). And finally there’s a glossary, directory & index.

All the dishes do not have pictures. Instead there are beautifully photographed sections of glossy paper in the book showcasing some of the dishes.

This is what a recipe page looks like (two on each page).

As one can understand this cookbook isn’t really made for Indians but for foreigners interested in the cuisine. Every dish name is translated into English & some of them end up sounding quite comical. The one thing I dislike about the book is that the recipes are quite short & lack details. I understand that they had to make some snips to fit 1000 recipes in a book, but sometimes there aren’t enough details or quantities aren’t properly indicated, I really wish it was better edited. But all in all I think it’s a beautiful, comprehensive & well researched book with a lot of great recipes & they’re probably not overstating it when they say that this is the only book on Indian food you’ll ever need. I’ve heard people say that this isn’t an easy book to get hold of but then I do all my shopping online. So if you don’t, try searching on your favorite online. This book is worth some trouble.

Buy India: The Cookbook online.

As a blogger & an analog photographer, this is a book I had been looking forward to for a while. Jennifer Altman & Susannah Conway are both bloggers who I’ve been following for a couple of years now. I finally got my hands on the book a fortnight ago.

Instant Love : How to Make Magic & Memories with Polaroids

The book is hardcover with great quality paper, it really looks good. I love that the center polaroid snap on the cover is of a Polaroid SX-70 (more on that tomorrow!)

The book is divided into five chapters.

Chapter one is The Basics. People who aren’t knowledgeable about analog photography tend to call all instant photos Polaroids. Also, among Polaroids itself there are different types of cameras that take different film formats. The book clearly explains the types of camera (Polaroid land camera, Polaroid SX-70, Polaroid 600, Polaroid Spectra, Fuji Instax mini & wide.) You will find useful information like background on the camera, type of film & availability, how to clean, where to get Polaroid accessories etc.

Have you ever taken an amazing photo, only to realize later that it was badly composed? Chapter two is called The Art of Composition & deals with all the things that help compose a photo like the rule of thirds, depth of field, & notes on colors, textures, patterns, symmetry etc.

Chapter three (one of my favorites!) is called Capturing the Light. Getting the right exposure with Polaroids can be tricky, & unlike digital or even 35mm film Polaroids are expensive so you just can’t waste too much film hoping you’ll get it right. This chapter sheds some light (get it?!) on the subject.

Chapter four is called Storage, Display and Projects & it pretty self explanatory. There are some great diys that I’d like to try.

Chapter five is Inspirational Portfolios. Five themed portfolios are presented there, to show you what kind of images you can get with your Polaroids.

The book is not overtly technical, but that is the beauty of it. Explanations are clear, well written & easy to understand, even if you’re completely new to instant photography. It did not tell me too much I didn’t already know but that is because I read extensively on analog photography. But to get all this information in one place is great. So whether you have a big old collection of Polaroid sitting on your shelf, or are looking to delve into instant photography soon, this is a book you need to have!

And since many people have asked me on instagram about where this book is available, you can buy it by clicking below.

Love,
